After many of us have written emails and letters to our politicians and manufacturers for years, not one of us has managed to convince them stop islam forcing manufacturers to certify our food and products halal. So we have come up with a new strategy. But before I explain, we need to know a little bit about halal certification and why we need to be worried about it.
Just how much is the Islamic halal market worth each year?
The latest figure being bandied around says $US700 billion. But a little digging reveals that the figure might actually be much higher. This figure comes from a Monash University report: http://www.monash.edu.au/monashmag/articles/february2014/halal-guide-to-consumer-faith.html#.UwRtxoXuyce
Firstly, we need to understand that halal certification has become a many tentacled octopus, reaching into virtually every area of our lives. Farmers are being forced to pay a halal certification fee for the grass the animals eat. Then a fee for the animals to be transported in halal certified vehicles. In many cases, even the drivers must be muslims now, as they are the only ones who are trusted by muslims to maintain the halal conditions. Slaughter houses pay. Packaging companies pay. Food processors pay. And finally, WE pay.
We learned on October 23rd 2013 that:
One abattoir has revealed that it has been paying $27,000 a MONTH! Considering there are at least 267 abattoirs around Australia, that amounts to a whopping $7,209,000 A MONTH! Even if only 50% of them are paying for halal certification, (we believe the number is closer to 80%), that is still just over three million dollars paid by consumers for nothing!
That is just one industry. But what about all the others that are paying? We know that some businesses pay as little as $700 a month, while others pay tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. And that is just Australia.
Not Just Food
We also know that halal does not apply just to food. This report explains that halal covers every aspect of a muslim
